Saskatoon: Growing Up with the Kilt Skate
/Saskatoon’s Great Canadian Kilt Skate has always been a family event.
Organized by the Saskatoon Highland Dancing Association it has featured the dance students who strap on the skates and show off their kilts.
It’s been an annual event — part of a national kilt skate coordinated by the Scottish Society of Ottawa.
In past years, Saskatoon has hosted kilt skates in subarctic temperatures.
This year, the temperatures were fine, but snowfall required some ice maintenance.
Each year, the girls keep coming back.
This year, at least four of the young skaters were at the inaugural kilt skate to celebrate Sir John A Macdonald’s 200th birthday in 2015.
The trees grow taller and so do the skaters.
The girls have grown up. Their skating has become stronger — I’m sure their Highland dancing has too! And they bring the ease and grace of Highland dance to the skating rink.
Well done, Saskatoon! We look forward to watching the skaters grow up in the years to come.
